More from Pilot's terms

The pilot.com/referrals page describes the offer differently: the referrer picks a $500 gift card or a reMarkable tablet, and the referee gets $500 off the first subscription.

02The economicsIllustrative

What this structure costs on your numbers

Take a plan of $50 a month: $600 in the first 12 months, at a 70% gross margin. Keeping half of the gross profit leaves a reward budget of $210 for each referred customer. These are example figures, not Pilot's.

With Pilot's structure, the rewards for one referred customer cost $1,000. That is more than the $420 of gross profit that one referred customer brings at this price, so the program cannot break even here. A structure like this pays off only with higher-value customers.
