What this structure costs on your numbers
Take a plan of $50 a month: $600 in the first 12 months, at a 70% gross margin. Keeping half of the gross profit leaves a reward budget of $210 for each referred customer. These are example figures, not Xero's.
With Xero's structure, the rewards for one referred customer cost $180. For 100 referred customers, if 50% would not have bought anyway, the program returns $3,000 of net contribution (16.7% ROI). It breaks even when 42.9% of referred customers are new because of it.
